K-pop star Hyuna collapses on stage in Macau

South Korean K-pop singer Hyuna (Kim Hyun-ah) sparked renewed concerns about her health after she collapsed during her performance at the Waterbomb Macau music festival on November 9.

Media reports say, the 33-year-old star was in the middle of performing her hit song "Bubble Pop!" (2011) when she fainted on stage.

Videos circulating on social media show two backup dancers immediately rushing to her side before a security staff member carried her off the stage.

Later that day, the former member of groups like Wonder Girls and 4Minute took to Instagram to apologize to her fans and provide an update on her condition.

"I’m truly sorry," she wrote in Korean. "It was only a short time since my last performance, but I wanted to show you my best side."

Hyuna noted that she had no recollection of the fainting spell and apologized specifically to fans in Macau who had purchased tickets. She also pledged to focus on her well-being: "I’ll try to build up my stamina and work hard consistently. It will be so great if everything goes my way, but I’ll try my best."

The incident follows a series of recent social media posts that had already worried her followers. Her social media posts were about her strict diet and weght loss.

Her one post on November 3 showed her chastising herself for her eating habits and pushing for a "strict diet" to return to being "skinny."

Just one day later, Hyuna revealed she had lost about 10kg in a month, posting a photo of a scale showing her weight at approximately 49kg. She commented on how difficult it was to stay out of the 50kg range.

This is not the first time Hyuna's health has caused a delay in her career. In August 2020, the release of her comeback single and subsequent album, I’m Not Cool (released January 2021), was delayed due to a diagnosis of vasovagal syncope, a type of fainting caused by a drop in blood pressure.

Furthermore, in November 2019, Hyuna publicly shared that she suffers from depression and panic disorder.

Hyuna married fellow South Korean singer Yong Jun-hyung, 35, in October 2024.
