Qatar Sets Income, Occupation, and Insurance Mandates for Foreign Residents Sponsoring Family Visit Visas
Foreign residents in Qatar looking to host relatives on a family visit visa must now satisfy strict income, employment category, and health insurance standards, according to official guidelines published on Qatar’s government portal.
The regulations set a clear financial benchmark for expatriates residing in the Gulf nation while outlining specific restrictions on eligible occupations.
Under the updated directives, a foreign resident must earn a minimum monthly salary of QAR 5,000 (approximately KSh 178,500) and present an accredited employment contract to meet the baseline financial threshold.
However, earning the required salary does not automatically qualify a resident to host family members.
The government explicitly stipulates that the host’s occupation must not fall under the labor category, making employment classification a decisive factor in the application process.
In addition to income and occupational requirements, Qatar mandates that all visiting family members must possess valid health insurance covering the full duration of their stay.
Officials emphasized that foreign residents should verify all requirements through Qatar's Ministry of Interior prior to submitting applications, as immigration regulations remain subject to update.
While the new family visit visa framework applies broadly to foreign residents—including large expatriate communities from Africa and Asia—citizens of neighboring Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations continue to enjoy distinct entry privileges.
Qatar maintains visa-free entry for nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, whereas citizens of all other countries remain subject to standard visa procedures.
