Akshay Kumar insures 650 stunt workers after on-set death of a stuntman

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has taken a praiseworthy step toward improving stunt safety in Indian cinema by insuring around 650 stunt professionals across the country.

This initiative follows the tragic death of veteran stuntman SM Raju on the set of the Tamil film Vettuvam, directed by Pa Ranjith and starring Arya.

Raju lost his life on July 13 while performing a high-risk stunt that went horribly wrong. A now-viral video shows him attempting a car-toppling scene that turned fatal.

As the vehicle hit the ramp, it spiraled uncontrollably and landed headfirst. Though the crew rushed to his aid, Raju succumbed to his injuries on the spot, prompting widespread concern over safety protocols in the film industry.

In response to this incident and broader safety concerns, Akshay Kumar has launched a health and accident insurance scheme for stunt professionals.

The initiative ensures cashless medical coverage of ₹5 to ₹5.5 lakh per person, whether injuries happen on set or elsewhere.

The move is being hailed as a crucial step in acknowledging the risks faced by action crew members and offering them much-needed protection.

Veteran stunt coordinator Vikram Singh Dahiya, known for his work on films like Gunjan Saxena, Antim, and OMG 2, confirmed the development.

“Thanks to Akshay sir, around 650 to 700 stuntmen and action crew members in Bollywood are now covered,” he said.

The tragic death of SM Raju has served as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who make on-screen action possible.

Akshay Kumar’s insurance initiative is being seen as a timely and meaningful tribute—not just to Raju, but to every stunt worker risking their life to bring cinematic action to life.
