Lionel Messi scripts MLS history in Inter Miami's 2-1 win
Lionel Messi may have faced disappointment in the FIFA Club World Cup, but his return to Major League Soccer has been nothing short of spectacular.
The Argentine maestro is showcasing an "unreal" goal-scoring ability, recently leading Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution with two first-half goals.
At 38 years old, Messi's performance on Wednesday night (July 9) etched his name into MLS history. He became the first player ever to score multiple goals in four consecutive MLS games.
This remarkable streak began in late May with two goals against Montreal in a 4-2 win, followed by another brace in a 5-1 rout of Columbus.
Miami's MLS campaign was briefly paused for the Club World Cup, where Messi netted one goal in four matches before Inter Miami's elimination by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
However, upon their return, Messi picked up right where he left off, contributing another two goals to a 4-1 victory at Montreal.
In total, Messi has now bagged 14 goals in 15 MLS appearances this season.
This puts him just two goals behind leading scorer Sam Surridge, who has played six more games for Nashville.
Messi's incredible run of eight goals in his last four MLS games (a league first since its inception in 1996) underscores his dominant form.
During the match at Gillette Stadium, Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a Revolution miscue with a precise left-footed shot from inside the box.
He doubled Miami's lead just 11 minutes later, receiving a brilliant through ball from Sergio Busquets and curling a left-footed shot past Slovenian goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.
Inter Miami's veteran goalkeeper, Oscar Ustari, also played a crucial role, making six saves.
Carles Gil managed to break Miami's clean sheet in the 79th minute, intercepting a pass from Tadeo Allende and firing a shot from outside the box.
This victory propelled Inter Miami from sixth to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.
With 35 points, they are now seven points behind leaders FC Cincinnati.
