Croatia qualifies for World Cup 2026; Germany and Netherlands edge closer

Croatia has officially secured their spot at the 2026 World Cup following a decisive 3-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in Zagreb on Friday (Nov. 14).

Despite falling behind early to a 16th-minute goal from Geza David Turi, Croatia quickly rallied, with Joško Gvardiol netting the equaliser just seven minutes later. Second-half goals from Petar Musa (57') and Nikola Vlašić (70') sealed the win.

The victory elevated Croatia to an unreachable 19 points in Group L. Second-placed Czech Republic, on 13 points with one match remaining, can no longer catch them, thus granting Croatia the automatic qualification berth.

Elsewhere in the qualifiers, both Germany and the Netherlands made significant strides toward securing their own spots.

Germany beat Luxembourg 2-0 to maintain their lead atop Group A. Nick Woltemade was the star, scoring both goals (49', 69') and continuing his excellent run of form. Germany, now on 12 points, will confirm their qualification with a draw against Slovakia.

The Netherlands earned a crucial point against Poland after coming back from a 1-0 deficit. Jakub Kaminski's first-half goal for Poland was cancelled out by Memphis Depay early in the second half, resulting in a valuable draw. The Dutch remain three points clear of Poland with 17 points in their group and require only a draw against Lithuania to qualify.

Despite their defeat, the Faroe Islands were a highlight of the campaign, staying in contention for a top-two spot until the final rounds and stunning Croatia with an early lead.

The focus now shifts to the final round of matches, where teams will battle for the remaining direct qualification spots and crucial playoff berths.
