Michelle Obama says Americans don’t want a woman president
Former First Lady Michelle Obama stated that Americans are not yet prepared for a woman to hold the presidency, a key reason she has no intention of seeking the nation's highest office.
Speaking at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on November 14 to promote her new book, "The Look," Obama was direct about her stance. "As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready," she commented during a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross.
She emphatically discouraged people from looking to her as a potential candidate, adding, "Don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not."
Obama suggested that the country has "a lot of growing up to do," attributing the resistance to the fact that "there are still, sadly, a lot of men who feel like they cannot be led by a woman, and we saw it. I think we still have growing to do in that regard." She concluded by saying, "So don't waste my time."
Despite her consistent refusal to run, Obama remained highly popular throughout her time as First Lady.
A 2024 poll even suggested that she was the only Democrat who could potentially defeat President Donald Trump.
However, the Democratic Party has nominated women for the presidency or vice presidency in two of the last three elections—Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris—both of whom ultimately lost their respective races to Trump.
